Beyond the Box

East Carolina Senior Tuana Coskun put up 16 points today and had a great start to the season! Her experience on Turkey’s National Team and her stellar season at Bucknell makes her a great athlete to watch in the coming season for East Carolina. Freshman Ava Rush scored her first ever college points today with a second chance tip-in off after a quick rebound. Mildred Dibua led the game on the defensive with a whopping 7 steals.

Charleston Southern has 13 new players on their 14 athlete roster, now representing 11 different countries, including Sweden, Nigeria, Belgium, Australia, Croatia, and Spain. Alaina Nettles is the solo returning member of last year’s squad. Their highest scorer this game, Celina Vilcinskas is the third tallest player this season in all of NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball.

East Carolina had a pretty warm start to their 3 point shooting for the season. Charleston Southern however started to claw back their field goal percentage up to 32% matching East Carolina by the end of the fourth quarter — due in part to a nearly 8 minute long scoring drought in the last quarter by the Pirates. The Charleston Southern Buccaneers were starting to take form in the second half, however the East Carolina Pirates edged them out with a final score of 45-61.

This was the sixth straight win for the East Carolina Pirates in their matchup against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, winning in front an attendance of over 3,000, mostly elementary schoolers for ECU’s Education Day.
