Beyond the Box
Saint Mary’s is playing their season opener with head coach Jeff Cammon at the helm for the Gaels. Stanford is coached by 3rd year head coach Kate Paye, who fully took over after the retirement of Tara VanDerveer. There are no seniors this year on the Stanford Women’s Basketball Squad, however by the end of the first quarter you couldn’t tell.
Stanford Women’s Basketball had 7 of their 15 player roster leave last year after missing the 2026 NCAA tournament for the first time in 36 seasons. Paye has also been the center of the controversy as well with some reported harsh locker room practices. Despite these reports, she has produced 6 WNBA first round draft picks and is the only women’s coach to win the WBCA D1 National Assistant Coach of the Year twice (2022 and 2024, the year Stanford won the tournament).
Shay Ijiwoye is a pillar on the Stanford squad and also a member of the Nigerian National Team who has led the defensive today with a staggering 5 steals. Stanford player Hailee Swain then had a career high of 22 points tonight, while sophomore Nora Ezike also had a collegiate career high of 18 points. For the Gaels, Lihi Azouri and Lucy Aherne led the team with 14 points and 13 points respectively.
Jeff Cammon has built one of the best defenses in Saint Mary’s WBB history in his foundational years in the program. His expertise was gathered through his years as head coach at CSU Long Beach, where he won Big West Coach of the Year in the 2022-23 season.
By the end of the third quarter, Stanford looks to have dominated in the paint and low post. However Saint Mary’s, while trailing behind, has had much better success in the perimeter.
Stanford pulled away with 87 points to secure their first win of the season.
